Margo Nygard: :)Hey Sheryl - I am going ot have to sign off and try again - hopefully join again.

charbeck: :)

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: Bye Margo I had to leave early a few weeks ago.

Me: no microphone today.

Moderator: Shelia you can type your intro please

Ken Hakstol - ARPDC: So you getto do two full time jobs and get paid for one.

Me: I'm a technology teacher @ The Independence School in Newark, DE

Mary Stauffer: that's about it!

Mary Stauffer: I'm a great value for our school

Me: I have an audio problem...be right back.

karenszymusiak: Some of our teachers are exploring the notion of finding great digital mentor "texts". We use many picture books for mentor texts in the writing workshop but we will need to develop a similar practice in the digital world.

charbeck: :)

charbeck: yep can do

Mary Stauffer: I've been watching the term being used but haven't figured it all out yet. I'll check it on the NING

Me: warlick?

Me: no. I don't have one with me.

John Holland: Hi all

Me: hi John

Moderator (John Holland): hi sheila

katehammond: Sorry, I'll have rejoin in a sec..

karenszymusiak: Hi, John

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: Yeah! Same here John !

bmacdonald: Hi It is Brenda MacDonald. Looking forward to John's presentation.

Jenn (Saskatoon): Hello everyone. I'm glad to be joining you all today.

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): Brenda-- fdang

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): I am so sorry

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): Be sure and tell them where you live and what you do Brenda

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: Sheila Lancaster PA Manheim Twp Schools

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): You too Jenn-- please tell us where you live and what you do.

Me to Mike Schreiner IU13 2: I live in West chester, but teach in Newark, DE

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): Did sound stop for you?

bmacdonald: Yes

charbeck: sound?

katehammond: Yes

ARPDC Dan: lost audio?

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): It will come back

Mary Stauffer: me too

Me: yes

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): wait a sec

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: A long commute. Get in that area now and then My son is working at Chester PA a soup kitchen

Mary Stauffer: k

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): and it will catch up

Margo Nygard: My apologies - I am a curriculum and instruction coordinator in Innisfail Alberta mainly responsible for K-12 math, science, second languages, AISI & mentorship. An example of tech integration was a project with one of our elementary schools and a reserve school sharing through skype, VC and using online collaboration tools.

Jenn (Saskatoon): I am an Instructional Consultant with Saskatoon Public Schools

Margo Nygard: my computer and I arent agreeing - thanks Sheryl

John Holland: hi everyone

John Holland: sorry i got the boot

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: Thought I sent the message private, yes son works in Chester PA

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): Do you have Head Start in Canada?

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): THe question I typed is for those of you who live in Canada.. Do you have Head Start for preschoolers?

Ken Hakstol - ARPDC: Not in Alberta

charbeck: Not in Manitoba

Jenn (Saskatoon): Not in Saskatchewan

charbeck: We have Nursery Kids start public school for half days when they are 4

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): http://www.nhsa.org/

Ken Hakstol - ARPDC: We have a program that is otional in some schools called PreK for 4 year olds

Jenn (Saskatoon): We have PreKindergerten for 3 and 4 year olds in our community schools.

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: Good point John, I wish we could connect to a large screen, or overhead projector. Some teachers nearby do. ( that is teachers in neigboring classroom using websites for resources)

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): This is for at-risk preschoolers who are often low socioeconomic

ARPDC Dan: @SNB In Alberta there is special funding for students assessed with severe entry deficits that are funded from age 3+ for early intervention.

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: absolutely! Hopefully the students always use it safely.

Jenn (Saskatoon): Our prekindergarten programs are often for low socioeconomic preschoolers as well

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): @ARPDC what is the $ used for?

charbeck: We have some programs in the inner city here but more are covered by the school division breakfast clubs, and post school activities to keep them engaged and off the streets

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): @charbeck not a lot of preschoolers on the streets <wink>

bmacdonald: I did a great deal of my master on early literacy and have read a great deal of Head Start materials.

ARPDC Dan: @SNB usually for 1-on-1 support for socialization skills experiences Depends on nature of the Delay

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): @brenda -- thanks for sharing that. It was an interest of mine as well.

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): His last point is called Digital Citizenship when thinking through PLP curriculum

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: Come to Lancaster PA many pre schoolers on the streets : ( not always safe either...

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): @Mike-- you're kidding -- right?

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: sorry no..

Ken Hakstol - ARPDC: In Alberta we have PUF project unit funding for kids with delays or learning disabilities. Unfortunately when the students enter grade 1 the PUF funding goes "Poof" and support is often less.

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): Are the gathered up by authorities and taken from families?

Moderator (John Holland): ok

Moderator (John Holland): realy?

Moderator (John Holland): lol

Moderator (John Holland): sure

ARPDC Dan: In Canada we have no Federal input into education so each province has their own approaches. No blanket coverage in programming.

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: All great things...

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/09poverty.shtml

charbeck: Seperate by division in the city of Winnipeg. Some offer programs others do not. Dependent on SES and history of what the division has done in the past

Jenn (Saskatoon): We have a similar programs in inner city and community schools in Saskatoon. This program is embedded into our school system.

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): http://starfall.com/

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): "pretend to touch the screen and make stuff happen"

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): http://earth.google.com/

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: Great Idea of Google Map

Mary Stauffer: You do really need to be careful if you pull google images in front of little kids - some times you get really problematic images even when you put in an innocent word

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): During the Unit Homes

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: I hear you

Moderator (John Holland): ok

Mary Stauffer: I do like pulling up kids houses on Google earth so they can see how they relate to the rest of the community

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: bye Karen

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): How do you blog with preschoolers?

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): thanks Karen

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: wonderful to make the connections, even support the family so they are not alone

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: I am waiting for the time of cameras in our classrooms, so anyone can "look in" any time

Mary Stauffer: It would be cool to set up a computer in the back of the classroom and allow kids to blog about what they are learning in class as they want to contribute.

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): One I actually helped to start TLN

Me: @mary - cool idea!

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): http://www.teacherleaders.org/

ARPDC Dan: It is a virtual REALITY

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: Thanks John

Ken Hakstol - ARPDC: Its here if you can get skype to function in your school or in AB where we have province wide Video Conferencing!

John Holland: its dinner time thanks!

Moderator (charbeck): What is 6% of 50? How would you solve this question?

katehammond: .06 X 50 ???

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: Haven't a clue, and on Friday afternoon the chance is not good

Mary Stauffer: I'd take 6% of 100 and then divide it in 1/2 I'm thinking it's 3

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: lol

Me: brain dead

Me: :-)

Mary Stauffer: got to love technology! There's alwasys another way.

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): http://sargentparkmathzone.blogspot.com/2010/12/finding-percents-with-ratio-table-and.html

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): see if you can get it to show on your screen if not seeing on whiteboard

Jenn (Saskatoon): Very cool. What a great way to record their thinking.

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): and push triangel

Moderator (charbeck): mine is over smile when yours is

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): Ok it stopped for me-- and I misspelled triangle

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: great

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): Oh yeah You tube is blocked for Mike

Me: looks like I'm having bandwidth problem. It starts and stops.

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): pout

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): but the child was describing the math process

Ken Hakstol - ARPDC: Its great. Especially in another language!

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): @Shelia I did notice you are having bandwidth issues

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): http://sargentparkmathzone.blogspot.com/2010/12/finding-percents-with-ratio-table-and.html

ARPDC Dan: Own language sure helps parents to assist with homework

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): @Mike I will show you how to save the chat and you can email it home and check out the links there

Jenn (Saskatoon): Oral communication is very powerful and can support written communication about mathematics.

Me to Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach: I'm in my room, away from family noise. Wireless doesn't seem to like me being so far away from the router.

Mike Schreiner IU13 2: Thanks Sheryl

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): to save the chat -- go to file -- save -- chat conversation

Moderator (charbeck): http://www.youtube.com/user/spmath789#p/u/11/2korWzqhjH0

Ken Hakstol - ARPDC: I've had similar experiences with students when they are shy if you give them a different tool they now have the confidence to try and you are building trust wit them.

Me: @snb Is there an online program that will record what the kids "draw?"

Moderator (Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach): hahaha

Me: For example

Ken Hakstol - ARPDC: I woulsn't expect that you wouldn't because you have built the trust.
